Care & Use
Stout Tents are crafted from premium 100% cotton canvas. To maintain its beauty, breathability, and waterproofing, and to ensure your warranty coverage remains valid, please follow these specialized care instructions.
The “Seasoning” Process (Mandatory for First Use)
• Initial Weathering: Before your first trip, set the tent up and soak it thoroughly with a garden hose, then let it dry completely.
• Sealing the Fibers: This process allows the cotton fibers to swell and the needle holes in the seams to shrink, creating a natural waterproof seal. If skipped, the tent may “mist” inside during the first rainfall.
Moisture & Mildew Prevention
• Bone Dry Storage: Never store your canvas tent damp or wet. This is the most important rule for canvas. Even a few hours in a bag while damp can cause irreversible mold and mildew damage.
• The 24-Hour Rule: If you must pack up in the rain, you must re-pitch the tent within 24 hours in a dry location until the canvas is “bone dry” to the touch before final storage.
• Airflow: Canvas is naturally breathable, but keeping windows or vents slightly open reduces internal condensation and prevents a “musty” smell during use.
Cleaning & Fabric Care
• Dry Brushing: Most dirt and dried mud can be removed once dry using a stiff-bristled brush.
• Water Only: For deeper cleaning, use only cold water. Never use detergents, bleach, or dish soap, as these will destroy the canvas’s natural protective oils and waterproof coating.
• Bird Droppings & Sap: Clean these off as soon as possible with water to prevent permanent staining or degradation of the fabric.
Zippers & Hardware
• Tensioning: Cotton canvas shrinks and expands based on humidity. Regularly check your guy lines; if the canvas is too tight during rain, it stresses the seams. If too loose, water can pool on the roof.
• Zipper Care: Do not force zippers. If a zipper is sticking, check for fabric obstructions and clean the teeth with a brush. Apply a specialized zipper lubricant or wax periodically.
Safe Operation
• Stove Safety: If using a wood stove, ensure the stove jack is properly installed and that the chimney pipe has a spark arrestor to prevent embers from landing on the roof.
• No Open Flames: Never use candles or open flames inside the tent.
